August 2008 - Issue 3: Industrial Coding & Marking Product Update
ITL Coding Inks always make their mark...
Inkjet printing technology dates back to the early 1950’s when Siemens created a basic inkjet device for scientific instrument recording. In the 1960’s inkjet printer development was mainly focussed on the creation of technology for use in high-speed production environments and this led to the development of three of the main types of inkjet printing technology which are still in use today.
Continuous (Flow) Ink Jet (CIJ) was patented by Dr Carl Hellmuth in Sweden in 1966 and remains the dominant process in coding and marking applications. Drop-on-Demand (DOD) Thermal / Bubblejet technology was independently invented by both Canon and HP in the late 1970’s. Piezoelectric was independently invented by both Spectra and Xaar in the 1980’s. Industrial Coding & Marking inkjet printer design continues to be dominated by CIJ, DOD and Thermal/Bubblejet technologies and most of the OEM’s offer printer models using each of them.
Coding & Marking applications demand technically sophisticated ink solutions as there are a huge number of substrates that can be coded; from polyethelene to cardboard to glass to recycled bottles and many more. The physical demands of each application are generally very high so a disciplined and detailed ink development process is required.
At ITL we know all about fomulating these type of inks. We have highly experienced development chemists and a core of employees who have been involved with industrial coding and marking inkjet inks for many years; some with OEM’s, some with independents, some with both. Their experience has helped us to identify the key products which has allowed us to produce inks which cater for the majority of the key printers, applications and substrates in the market.
ITL inks are designed to at least match the OEM’s equivalent product and in many cases our inks will provide an improvement in printer reliability, ink drying time or compatibility with a more varied range of substrates.
ITL Industrial Coding & Marking inks are available for most of the main printer brands:

We only make green ink !
The environment is the hot topic of the moment in the industry and it is an area in which ITL have always been proactive. ITL ink solutions can help printers to reduce negative impact on the planet and our company operations are always monitored to ensure that they are as environmentally friendly as possible.
Organic and Lactate Grade Solvents
We use these in our ink formulations wherever possible as these are less harmful to the environment and also to individuals. They are able to be broken down naturally by the human body unlike some other solvent raw materials.
Reduce VOC's:
Our Eco Solvent inks are formulated with reduced VOC (Volative Organic Compound) content leading to significantly lower emmissions.
Refillable Cartridge Systems & Bullk Ink
We offer refill inks, bulk inks, bulk ink systems and refillable cartridges to our customers so they have a choice when it comes to generating new plastic cartridge waste.
Recyclable Materials
We fill the majority of our inks into recyclable HDPE bottles and all our paper and cardboard waste goes for recycling.
REACH Compliance:
We are REACH compliant as we do not make anything new, we make mixtures from existing substances.
No Heavy Metals:
We do not use heavy metals in our inks in order to comply with the RoHS regulations.
