June 2008 - Issue 2: Case Study Astra Signs & ITL 11X Inks
ITL ink provides extra punch at Eastlands...
ITL’s 11x inks were chosen by local print supplier Astra Signs to produce signage, billboards and banners for Ricky Hatton’s World Title mBoxing defence at Eastlands, the home of Manchester City Football Club. Astra printed onto a number of different substrates using a HP Grandjet printer.
Astra were challenged with the task of producing all elements of graphical display for the event and found ITL 11X inks to be the complete solution for the job. Owner and MD Dave Derbyshire said, “ITL 11X inks were the perfect choice for this job as they can achieve a very wide gamut of high impact colours. These inks will print onto many types of material so we knew we wouldn’t have to be concerned about compatiblity when switching between a number of different substrates.” (www.astrasigns.com)
ITL 11X inks are designed for printers with Xaar 126 or 128 heads, such as the HP Scitex Grandjet and XL Jet and for the NUR Ultima, Salsa and Fresco. Further details on 11X inks, including Technical Data, can be found on the PRODUCTS pages of this website.
Experience in Operations & Production provides real customer benefits..
We will be producing a series of departmental profiles over coming issues of FULL COVERAGE so that our customers get to know the team behind the scenes here at ITL and how it helps us to maintain the highest standards in ink manufacturing. In profile this month - Production & Operations.
ITL's Production Department is led by Operations Manager Stuart Woosey who has been with the company for 5 years and has worked in "inkjet" for more than 20. Stuart gained a wealth of valuable experience working for a major international OEM where he developed specialist knoweldge of industrial coding and marking inks. Having gained a HND in Engineering, Stuart has also added a Fellowship of the Manufacturing Institute to his list of qualifications and has completed the company's many ISO9001 production management courses. He is responsible for all of ITL's ink production and material purchasing and oversees ITL's warehousing, shipping and distribution logistics.
Stuart and the production team have been responsible for major on-site improvements which deliver real benefits to all of our customers including significant increases in the first time "pass-rate" for manufactured inks, decreased lead times and increased on-time deliveries, plus a number of cost-saving schemes and reductions in the businesses overall stockholding. Stuart lives in Warrington with his wife and two children.
Stuart's team includes Alan Skelhorn, a recent addition to the company, who has 12 years experience in polymer and chemical processing. Alan's duties include dispensing raw materials, initial ink manufacture, mixing and filtering of inks and post-lab ink adjustments, working to ISO9001 standards and to good manufacturing practices. Alan is supported by Paul Malaney who has been with us for 2 years and is responsible for packaging, bottling, stock maintenance and order picking. John Hulley, who has worked for ITL for 5 years, is our Warehouse Supervisor and organises the picking and dispatch of ordered products and also co-ordinates the production-sales interface.
ITL are fortunate to have such an experienced team which is made up of long-serving members. They add real value to the quality of our manufacturing operation and are committed to ITL's ISO9001 certification and lean manufacturing principles.

ITL True Solvent JS5 Inks launching for Mimaki "production powerhouse".
ITL JS5 True Solvent inks are being launched shortly for use on Mimaki JV5 series printers. These inks are designed to match Mimaki HS3 inks and will provide our customers with a competitively priced and reliable alternative to OEM inks. Mimaki JV5 series printers are priced at around £40K and are designed for high-speed digital banner printing applications and, according to Mimaki's website, offer "stunning quality and blistering speed" with the ability to print to 40m2 per hour and up to a maximum resolution of 1440dpi.
This series of Mimaki machines are particularly thirsty beasts and during beta trials in Venezuela we ran more than 8 litres of JS5 ink PER COLOUR through the test printer - in the first week of testing alone !
Inks are supplied in 440ml cartridges and the printer runs in either 4 x 4 CMYK or in 6 x 3 CMYK, LC,LM modes. ITL JS5 inks are "no flush, plug and play" compatible so the conversion process is made as simple as possible. The inks are extremely fast-drying and produce vibrant colours.
Also available shortly are ITL's JV33 Solvent Inks which are a match for Mimaki's SS21 inks. With the JV33 series printers featuring a new printhead compared to the original JV3 models, some ink re-formulation was neccesary to ensure full compatibility and optimum performance.
